South Australia - Overview

In 2007, 3478  cases of chlamydia, 457 cases of gonorrhoea and 50 cases of infectious syphilis were detected in South Australia (Summary statistics). 

In the same period, 55 individuals were notified with HIV infection and 3 individuals were notified with AIDS.  Of the 8 deaths notified, 3 were attributed to an AIDS defining illness (Summary statistics).  

During 2007, 709 medical notifications of hepatitis C infection included 47 incident cases (acquired in the previous 12 months).  Hepatitis B medical notifications in 2007 included 11 acute cases (Summary statistics). 

Clinic 275

The most common infection diagnosed at Clinic 275 continues to be genital warts (19% male, 14% female).  Other common conditions in males were chlamydia (7%), balanitis (4%), urethral irritation (3%), NSU (2%), and genital herpes (3%).  In females, conditions included bacterial vaginosis (8%), candida vaginitis (8%), chlamydia (8%) and genital herpes (4%).  A high proportion of clients attending Clinic 275 had no illness (51% male, 48% female).  Overall there were 16390 clinic attendances in 2007 (Summary statistics).

Contact tracing at Clinic 275

Clinic 275 followed up 487 cases of genital chlamydial infection.  Contact tracing was effective in detecting 88 new cases of chlamydia among the contacts of males, and 65 cases in contacts of females.  The yield of contacts per index case was 1.7 for male cases and 1.7 for female cases (Table 1.2).   Of 153 new infections detected, 117 (76%) individuals were examined within 14 days of being contacted (Table 1.3).

Clinic 275 followed up 64 cases of gonorrhoea.  Twelve new cases were detected in contacts of males examined and one new cases were detected among contacts of female cases (Table 1.2).  Fifteen contacts had been diagnosed positive prior to being located.
