South Australia - Overview

In 2005, 2701 cases of chlamydia, 400 cases of gonorrhoea and 13 cases of syphilis were detected in South Australia (Summary statistics). 

In the same period, 51 individuals were notified with HIV infection and 7 individuals were notified with AIDS.  Of the 6 deaths notified, 3 were attributed to an AIDS defining illness (Summary statistics).

During 2005, 750 medical notifications of hepatitis C infection included 49 incident cases (acquired in the previous 12 months).  Hepatitis B medical notifications in 2005 included 8 acute cases (Summary statistics). 

Clinic 275

The most common infection diagnosed at Clinic 275 continues to be genital warts (20% male, 15% female (Figure 1.1).  Other common conditions in males were chlamydia (7%), balanitis (4%), urethral irritation (4%), NSU (2%), and genital herpes (3%).  In females, conditions included bacterial vaginosis (9%), candida vaginitis (9%), chlamydia (7%) and genital herpes (4%).  A high proportion of clients attending Clinic 275 had no illness (48% male, 60% female).  Overall there were 16379 clinic attendances in 2005 (Summary statistics).

Contact tracing at Clinic 275

Clinic 275 followed up 398 cases of genital chlamydial infection.  Contact tracing was effective in detecting 51 new cases of chlamydia among the contacts of males, and 56 cases in contacts of females.  The yield of contacts per index case was 1.6 for male cases and 1.7 for female cases (Table 1.2).   Of 107 new infections detected, 89 (83%) individuals were examined within 14 days of being contacted (Table 1.3).

Clinic 275 followed up 50 cases of gonorrhoea.  Nine new cases were detected in contacts of males examined, while no new cases were detected among contacts of female cases (Table 1.2).  A further nine contacts had been diagnosed positive prior to being located.
