South Australia - Overview

In 2002, 1802 cases of chlamydia, 208 cases of gonorrhoea and 33 cases of syphilis were detected in South Australia (Summary statistics). 

In the same period, 33 individuals were notified with HIV infection and 16 individuals were notified with AIDS.  Of the 12 deaths notified, 10 were attributed to an AIDS defining illness (Summary statistics).

During 2002, 750 medical notifications of hepatitis C infection included 44 incident cases (acquired in the previous 12 months).  Hepatitis B medical notifications in 2002 included ten acute cases (Summary statistics).

Clinic 275

The most common infection diagnosed at Clinic 275 continues to be genital warts (20% male, 11% female) (Figure 1.1).  Other common conditions in males were chlamydia (6%), balanitis (5%),urethral irritation (4%), NSU (3%), and genital herpes (2%).  In females, conditions included bacterial vaginosis (9%), candida vaginitis (8%), chlamydia (5%) and genital herpes (3%).  A high proportion of clients attending Clinic 275 had no illness (46% male, 47% female).  Overall there were 14430 clinic attendances in 2002 (Summary statistics).

 Contact tracing at Clinic 275

Clinic 275 followed up 324 cases of genital chlamydial infection.  Contact tracing was effective in detecting 66 new cases of chlamydia among the contacts of males, and 61 cases in contacts of females.  The yield of contacts per index case was 1.5 for male cases and 1.8 for female cases (Table 1.2).  Of 127 new infections detected, 104 (82%) individuals were examined within 14 days of being contacted (Table 1.3).

 Clinic 275 followed up 55 cases of gonorrhoea.  Twenty one new cases were detected in contacts of males examined, while no new cases were detected among contacts of female cases (Table 1.2).  Eight contacts had been diagnosed prior to being located.
