Clinic 275

The most common infection diagnosed at Clinic 275 continues to be genital warts (19% male, 11% female) (Fig 1). Common conditions in males were NSU (3%), balanitis (4%), urethral irritation (5%) and chlamydia (3%) and in females candidiasis (11%), bacterial vaginosis (6%), chlamydia (3%) and genital herpes (3%) (Fig 1). A high proportion of clients attending Clinic 275 had no illness (45% male, 46% female) (Table 1).

Overall there were 15286 clinic attendances in 1998 (see Clinic 275 summary statistics).

Contact Tracing at Clinic 275

Clinic 275 followed up 248 cases of chlamydial infection. Of these, contact tracing was effective in detecting 30 new cases in males and 31 in females, with a yield of 2.0 contacts per male index case and 2.1 contacts per female index case (Table 2). Of the 61 new cases detected, 8 individuals were examined within 2 days of being contacted (Table 3).

For gonorrhoea 4 new cases were detected in contacts of males examined while no cases were detected in contacts of females examined for gonorrhoea (Table 2). Ten males and two females had pre-existing disease.
