Summary of Sexually Transmitted Diseases in South Australia,
1997

In 1997 there were 1052 (71/100,000) cases of chlamydia, 323
(22/100,000) cases of gonorrhoea and 31 (2/100,000) cases of syphilis detected
in South Australia (see Table 1).
In 1997, 35 HIV cases were notified (1 case less than the
previous year).
In 1997, 24 individuals were notified with an AIDS defining
illness, and 28 individuals died of an AIDS defining illness.
During 1997, medical notifications of Hepatitis C infection
included 51 incident cases. Hepatitis B medical notifications in 1997
included 18 acute cases (see Table 2).

Infections Diagnosed at Clinic 275
The most common infection diagnosed at Clinic 275 continues to
be genital warts (18% of male clinical episodes, 13% female).
Common conditions in males were:
- non specific urethritis (3%)
- balanitis (4%)
- urethral irritation (6%)
- chlamydia (3%)
In females the most common conditions were:
- candidiasis (12%)
- bacterial vaginosis (6%)
- genital herpes (3%)
- chlamydia (2%)
A high proportion of clients attending Clinic 275 had no
illness (44% of males, 48% of females). Overall there were 14631 clinic
attendances in 1997. (See Table 3).
Contact Tracing
Clinic 275 followed up 166 cases of chlamydial
infection. Of these, contact tracing was effective in detecting 17 new cases in
males and 12 in females, with a yield of 1.83 contacts per male index case and
1.75 contacts per female index case. Of the 29 new cases detected 12 individuals
were examined within 2 days of being contacted.
For gonorrhoea six new cases were detected in contacts of
males examined while no cases were detected in contacts of females examined for
gonorrhoea.
