Summary of Sexually Transmitted Diseases Diagnosed in South Australia, 1995

In 1995 there were 774 (0.54/1000) cases of chlamydia, 255 (0.18/1000) cases of gonorrhoea and 45 (0.03/1000) cases of syphilis detected in South Australia (see Table 1).

The number of new HIV diagnoses notified for 1995 was 31, a decrease of 5 cases from the previous year. In 1995, 30 individuals were notified with an AIDS-defining illness, and 35 individuals died of an AIDS-defining illness (See Table 2).

Infections Diagnosed at Clinic 275

The most common infection diagnosed at Clinic 275 continues to be genital warts (17% of male clinical episodes, 11% female).

Common conditions in males were:

  • non specific urethritis (7%)
  • balanitis (5%)
  • urethral irritation (4%)
  • chlamydia (2%)

In females the most common conditions were:

  • candidiasis (12%)
  • bacterial vaginosis (7%)
  • genital herpes (3%)
  • chlamydia (2%)

A high proportion of clients attending Clinic 275 had no illness (42% of males, 45% of females). Overall there were 14261 clinic attendances in 1995. (See Table 3).

Contact Tracing

Contact tracing resulted in new cases of gonococcal infection being detected in 38% of contacts of males and 22% of contacts of females examined for gonorrhoea. For chlamydia, new cases were detected in 37% of contacts of males and 26% of contacts of females.
