Gonococcal Infection 01/04/07 - 30/06/07
In
the second quarter of 2007, 184 cases of gonococcal infection were
notified to STD Services by laboratories.
Medical notifications were received for all 184 cases.
Of the 184 cases notified, 109 (59%) occurred in males, and 75
(41%) in females (Table 5.1).
Gonococcal
infection occurred in a wide age range.
However, the majority 122 (66%) cases occurred in males and females
aged 15 to 29 years (Table
5.1).
Racial origin was reported as Aboriginal for 62 female cases (83%), and
62 (57%) males. Fifty-six
cases (30%) were reported as Caucasian (Table 5.2).
The majority of individuals 167 (91%) acquired the infection in South Australia
(Table 5.3).
Of these, 99 cases (59%) were diagnosed in residents of South Australian
communities in
Central Australia
. The increase in
notifications in Aboriginal persons for this quarter largely reflects the
annual screening program in the remote far north of
South Australia
. The screening program was
held from 16 April - 28 May 2007.
The
site of infection for 18 males (17%) with gonococcal infection who
reported male to male sexual contact is shown in Table
5.4.
