HIV INFECTION IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA

 HIV Infection 1985 - 1995

There have been 602 individuals diagnosed with HIV infection, 558 (93%) in males and 44 (7%) in females (Table 1.1). Of the males diagnosed, 75% (418) reported male to male sexual contact, 9% (52) reported injecting drug use and 5% (26) reported both risk factors. Injecting drug use was reported by 50% (22) of the women diagnosed with HIV infection and 38% (17) reported heterosexual transmission.

HIV Infection 01/01/96 - 31/03/96

Eleven men have been diagnosed with HIV infection in the first quarter of this year. Of the 11 men, 8 reported male to male sexual contact as their risk factor and 1 male reported heterosexual contact (Table 1.2). Five men (Table 1.3) reporting male to male sexual contact had acquired their infection in the preceding 12 months (defined by a negative HIV antibody test in the preceding 12 months prior to diagnosis).

Laboratory Screening For HIV Infection 01/01/96 - 31/03/96

There have been 20341 screening tests performed, 8759 (43%) tests were performed on males, 11312 (56%) on females and 17 tests were performed on individuals whose sex was unknown (Table 1.4).

HEPATITIS C SURVEILLANCE IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA

Hepatitis C Medical Notification 1 January 1996 - 31 March 1996

Laboratories reported 595 individuals who tested positive for Hepatitis C infection in the first quarter of 1996, 533 (90%) individuals were notified by medical practitioners. Of the 533 medical notifications received, 206 (39%) individuals reported never having a test, 197 (37%) had previously tested positive for Hepatitis C, 28 (5%) individuals reported a previous negative test result and information on testing history was unavailable for 102 (19%) individuals. Of the 28 individuals with a previous negative test 4 were incident cases (defined by a negative test or acute clinical illness in the preceding 12 months).

Of the 336 individuals who tested positive for Hepatitis C infection for the first time in 1996, 203 individuals (60%) reported past and/or present history of injecting drug use, 32 (10%) reported blood transfusion/blood products as their only risk factor, tattoos accounted for 6% (20) and unknown exposure category accounted for 20% (71) of the infections reported (Table 2.1).

A high proportion of individuals were aged between 30 - 39 years (45% of men, 41% of women) (Table 2.2).

There have been 4 individuals who acquired the infection in the preceding 12 months (defined by a negative hepatitis C test in the 12 months prior to diagnosis or diagnosed acute illness) (Table 2.3). None of the incident cases reported an acute illness involving jaundice within the last 12 months.

There have been 14817 screening tests performed 7172 (48%) on males 7627 (51%) on females 18 tests were performed on individuals whose sex was unknown (Table 2.4).

HEPATITIS B SURVEILLANCE IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA

As of the 16th January, 1996 the surveillance of Hepatitis B infection was transferred from the Communicable Diseases Control Branch to STD Services.

Hepatitis B medical notification 1 January 1996 - 31 March 1996

During the first quarter of 1996, 76 Hepatitis B medical notifications were received. Of these, 3 were acute cases of Hepatitis B infection (Tables 3.1, 3.2), 16 were carriers of greater than twelve months duration and 57 were individuals who tested surface antigen positive for the first time in this quarter.

Of the 57 individuals who tested surface antigen positive for the first time, the racial origin of a high proportion (67%) was reported as being Asian (Table 3.3).

Table 3.4 shows the number of Hepatitis B surface antigen tests performed by laboratories for this quarter.
