Should I see a doctor...Unprotected Sex with a New PartnerMany people who acquire an STD do not develop any signs or symptoms. Consequently the only way to be sure you have escaped infection is to have a check-up with appropriate testing. Proper use of condoms reduces, but does not eliminate, the risk of acquiring an STD. The best time to be tested is about one week after exposure when testing will detect whether you have acquired gonorrhoea or chlamydia. You should not pass urine for 4 hours before seeing the doctor as this may decrease the reliability of the tests performed. Tests for hepatitis, HIV infection and syphilis may take up to 3 months to become positive, but baseline testing at your initial visit is often useful. A further blood test 3 months later may be required. |
