Non-specific Urethritis
Please read this disclaimer first.
Non-specific urethritis (NSU) occurs in men and may
produce discharge from the penis or burning when passing urine. It is an
inflammation of the urethra which is not caused by gonorrhoea or
chlamydia. Antibiotic treatment cures the infection. Although it does not
cause symptoms in women, female partners of men with NSU may need to be
examined if re-infection occurs. Male partners of men with NSU should also
be examined.
NSU can only be diagnosed by a health care worker.
Accurate diagnosis requires a swab to be taken from the urethra. (A urine
test is not sufficient.) The swab is wiped on a glass slide and the
resulting smear is examined under a microscope. The smear may show pus
cells which indicate active infection of the urethra (urethritis) is made.
If, on extra testing, no sign of gonorrhoea or chlamydia can be found,
then the diagnosis of NSU is made. |
